EU bans Indoxacarb, used as pesticide

New EU regulations affect the approval of Active Substances by Member States. On November 26, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/2081 was published, adopting the decision to NON renewal of approval of active substance Indoxacarb.

In addition, it calls for the adoption of the corresponding transitional measures, whereby Member States withdraw the authorizations of plant protection products containing the active substance Indoxacarb by 19 March 2022 at the latest.

In addition, that Regulation provides that any grace period granted by Member States in accordance with Article 46 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 shall expire on 19 September 2022 at the latest.

Indoxacarb is an oxadiazine compound. It acts by contact and ingestion as an insecticide for the control of lepidopterans and other insects and is currently widely used on leafy vegetables, horticultural crops, fruit trees, cereals, etc.

Actions such as the EFSA Peer Review articles, which highlighted the toxicity of the compound, have been key to the non-renewal of the approval of Indoxacarb. These evaluations commissioned by the Commission on the ecotoxicity of the compound on bees and small herbivorous mammals highlighted the inherent risks caused using the compound and finally led to the non-renewal of the approval of Indoxacarb.

In addition, in recent months, these EFSA positions have led several market operators to include the active substance Indoxacarb in the lists of compounds not allowed in their products to be marketed.
