Final Rule – New Animal Drugs

Updating Tolerances for Residues of New Animal Drugs in Food

The New Animal Drugs; Updating Tolerances for Residues of New Animal Drugs in Food final rule was published on July 11, 2019 and will be effective on September 9, 2019.

The New Animal Drugs; Updating Tolerances for Residues of New Animal Drugs in Food final rule will increase understanding by:

  • Standardizing and clarifying standards used for determining, updating, and organizing tolerances
  • Provide a revised scope and explain considerations to use to ensure safe use of the veterinary drug when raising food-producing animals
  • Provide a tolerance listing format to help improve conditions of use found in 21 CFR 556, subpart B
  • Provide definitions of key terms that the FDA uses when determining tolerances.

The rule does not establish new tolerances but will help the applicable regulations to be more readily understood, therefore increasing the safety of our food.
