FDA Withdraws Obsolete Pet Food CPGs

On April 30, 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) withdrew three out-of-date Compliance Policy Guides (CPGs) that explained enforcement policies that the FDA followed for materials used in animal foods. These obsolete CPGs are no longer necessary because the hazards that were addressed in the guides are now covered by the Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic (FD&C) Act and FSMA’s Animal Food Preventive Controls (PCAF) Rule.

Under the Act and the PCAF Rule, dangers such as biological hazards (pathogen) and chemical hazards (drug residues) are controlled by the requirement to establish a food safety plan that identifies and controls known or reasonably foreseeable hazards.

The Tentamus Group, in particular, Tentamus North America, offers various services to assist in compliance with the Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic (FD&C) Act and FSMA’s Animal Food Preventive Controls (PCAF) Rule:

  • Testing finished product and ingredients for pathogens (Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes)
  • Testing finished product and ingredients for drug residues (pentobarbital)
  • Consulting services (e.g. Food Safety plan creation and review)
  • Conducting a hazard analysis and risk assessment for your manufacturing facility and production process

Further information about the FDA CPG Withdraws can be found here.
